altAssistive Technology and Equity (University of Pittsburgh)

This module aims to improve the quality of assistive technology (AT) and the fairness with which it is distributed. Since wheelchairs are the single most enabling device for people living with SCI, the module will focus particularity on wheelchair quality.

The project will gather data on AT use and distribute findings related to wheelchair failure as widely as possible; giving SCI consumers the information they need to maker informed choices. The project will also examine how factors like financial strain, education, and health literacy affect AT quality. Finally this module will look at the effect of unconscious provider bias on AT quality and health outcomes.
