The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is used by the National SCI Database to evaluate long term functional outcomes. however, the FIM is not sensitive to functional differences in SCI patients with different levels of injury severity.

It also has trouble capturing functional changes that take place after inpatient rehabilitation. The SCI-FI is a new evaluation tool developed through collaboration among 6 model system centers which includes functional attitudes relevant to patients across all levels and severities of SCI. This modular project is designed to test the effectiveness of the SCI-FI and generate a comparison between the SCI-FI and the FIM.
