Exercise and Breathlessness (SRH)

altExercise and Breathlessness (SRH)

In chronic SCI, muscular weakness and paralysis result in a decreased ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), and a predisposition to a sedentary lifestyle. A reduction in physical activity and overall fitness is associated with increased mortality.

In addition, persons with SCI commonly report dyspnea, a troubling respiratory symptom defined as a report of breathlessness or shortness of breath while conducting daily activities. The goal of this modular project is to look at the relationship between dyspnea, life satisfaction and time spent on daily activities inside and outside the home, including participation in a regular exercise program.
